Founders' Stories: True Narratives on Starting a Business

Have you ever wanted to get the real scoop on how your favorite businesses got their start? Did the idea come to them in the middle of the night? Was it years of turmoil before figuring out the right path? Did they have to stop and start over?

Join us for an evening of networking and insight into entrepreneurial origin stories from Duane Peterson, Founder and Co-President of SunCommon, and Jovial King, Founder and CEO of Urban Moonshine, moderated by Kelly Scannell, COO of Reading Plus. Find out how it all started.

About our panelists:

Duane Peterson raised the capital to launch and grow SunCommon and drove SunCommon’s dynamic culture and innovative marketing.  He’s now responsible for investor relations, legal, HR — that’s Happiness Resources — and SunCommon’s new net-positive office building.  He’s a social entrepreneur with an eclectic 35-year career in socially responsible business, campaign management, government service and community involvement.

Jovial King started Urban Moonshine in her kitchen six years ago, and it has grown from a booth at the local farmers market to a national brand. Raised deep in the countryside of Northern Vermont, Jovial grew up on an off-the-grid homestead where she spent endless hours wandering in the woods, swimming in the creek, climbing trees, and digging around the garden. It was a childhood deeply immersed in plants and exploration of the wild, uncultivated power of nature. She found she had a great love of plants and herbal medicine. Her goal is to bring herbal medicine out of the cupboard and onto the counter, into everyday life.

Kelly Scannell (moderator) leads purpose-driven, heart-centered, sharp-minded teams that focus on customer success. She is the COO of Reading Plus, an ed-tech company whose web-based assessment and instructional technology develops students' silent reading skills. She also is an executive coach, serves on the board of LaunchVT, and invests in people and companies who work on things that matter.

#PitchPlease: A pitch workshop for YOU (as long as you’re queer, female, gender nonbinary, trans, OR an ally)

Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2016
Time: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Fee: $20 (dinner will be provided)
Location: OgeeOne Lawson Lane Suite 130 | Burlington, VT 05401

Calling all queers: Pitch, please

Vermont is becoming a green tech hub of note, true, but from where we’re standing, the scene could use a strong dose of diversity. That’s where you come in!

Have you been stewing on a business plan for quite a while, but haven’t gotten up the nerve to pitch it to anyone? Do you have an idea but no plan? Whether you come from a sales background, or you’re an engineer, whether you’re 24 or 64, we want your pitches.

We’ve snagged a group of leaders in the local entrepreneurial scene (all female and/or queer!), and we're gathering at Ogee in Burlington after work on Tuesday, September 20th to give you some tips on developing a solid business plan, help you hone your pitch, and guide you toward the next steps on your entrepreneurial journey.

We’re keeping #PitchPlease small in order to maximize the benefit for all participants – register ASAP while there are still spots available. Once you've registered, we'll send some materials to help you prepare for the workshop.

Guest speakers & workshop facilitators include:

Kelly Scannell, COO, ReadingPlus.com

Abbott Stark, Chief Marketing Officer, Ogee  (LaunchVT 2016 winner)
